On Friday, 19. March 2021, Fridays for Future called on people around the world to participate in the seventh global climate strike under the motto “no more empty promises”.
Among the 5000 people answering the call in Vienna were scientists for future from our unit, who protested insufficient climate policies as part of a three-kilometer-long human chain on the Vienna Ringstraße. The campaign was also supported by NGOs, SOS Kinderdorf, ÖGB, religious communities and regular Viennese citizens. Speeches and live music acts were held at various locations from Schottentor to Karlsplatz and Stubentor. Lisa Kiesenhofer from Fridays for Future called this broad and diverse support essential for eco-social change.
All activities were planned and organised with strict Coronavirus safety rules, such as obligatory wearing of FFP masks (“mouth nose climate protection”) and a minimum distance of three meters between protesters.
